What is Yarn?

Yarn is a continuous length of interlocked fibres. Yarn manufacturing is a sequence of converting raw fibers’ in suitable yarn for various products. This is used in the production of textiles, sewing, weaving, embroidery, and Knitting. Fibres are natural or artificial substances which are notably long, and they are used to manufacture other materials. Yarn may be colored, dyed, undyed, or natural; there is wide selection of yarns produced to provide the varieties.

Types of yarns:

·         Blended dyed spun yarn
·         Cotton blended dyed
·         Mélange yarn
·         Polyester
·         Acrylic
·         Cotton Mélange
·         Injection slub yarn
·         Neppy yarn
·         Roving grindle yarn
·         Sirospun
·         Siro compact
·         Lycra twisted
·         Core spun
·         Double core yarns

Qualities of yarn manufacturing for handcrafts is sold & measured by weight in ounces or grams. There are some common sizes for measuring the strands like; 25g, 50g, 100g skeins, and some textile industry use three, four, and six, eight ounce skeins to measure. Fibres can get moisture from air, so textile industries use standard temperature and humidity to measure. Weavers also use another option to measure the weight of yarn and that is ‘Wraps per Inch (WPI)’. The process is to wrap the yarn around the ruler and count the number of wraps that fit in an inch.

Comparison of material properties

Materials like natural fibers’ require super washing and finishing treatment for cellulose fabric and yarn, most importantly cotton & flax which is used to improve dye uptake, and reduce the fabric shrinkage. Synthetic and natural yarns both can form a little ball of fibers’ called Pill. Yarns with combined fibers’ like synthetic and natural have the properties of both fibers’ which lighten the weight of the garment, increase durability, provide machine wash ability, and also provide stain resistance. One of the varieties of yarn is Spun Yarn; they are the twisted threads such as natural or synthetic silk and fibers’ together to make a single or characterized thread, this process of twisting threads is called spinning.

Yarn manufacturing is a process of mixing group of fibers’ to make different kind of Yarns. Threads are type of yarn which is usually used to sew by hand or by machine. Threads are twisted in two different directions either S twist or Z twist, the S twist goes up to the left and Z twist go to the right.
The most common fiber is cotton which is used throughout the world. And the common spun fibers’ are cotton and polyester in the world. Another common animal fiber is wool which used for hand knitting; acrylic yarns and wools are frequently used yarns.
